…For over a week, the blockade proved effective

By Lawan Danjuma Adamu

Since October 9, bandit commander Rambo blockaded the Gusau-Dansadau highway, cutting off a vital lifeline to thousands of residents across many communities within the Dansadau district.

Rambo threatened to maintain the chokehold unless residents of Dansadau town paid N50million and vigilantes in Yar Yasha, whom he accused of killing his men and seizing their weapons, returned the arms.

He looted and destroyed 13 vehicles and kidnapped their occupants, as he attempted to prevent essential supplies from reaching residents of the besieged communities, while additionally threatening to burn up to 250 vehicles.

For over a week, the blockade proved effective. People in Dansadau town and surrounding areas experienced a shortage of medicines, sugar and fuel. Basic household commodities for daily use, like detergents, also became scarce.
But on October 20, troops broke the siege and escorted vehicles loaded with much needed supplies into the area.

With the blockade removed though, Rambo’s action marks a dangerous and strategic shift in bandit tactics. A win for the group in Dansadau could have served as a new operational template for bandits across the North West, where blockades could become a standard economic weapon to force civilian submission.

A situation where bandits respond to community resistance and vigilante strikes by isolating and severing an entire population, risks increasing their influence and control.

Going forward, Nigerian security apparatus must prevent blockades from lasting even an hour to deny criminals an economic warfare template for dominating northwestern Nigeria.
