NGO empowers 100 Borno women on self-reliance, peace-building

A nongovernmental organisation, Hope Alive Care Initiatives (HACI), has empowered 100 vulnerable women on self-reliance and peace building in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Government Areas of Borno state.
Each of the 100 women was empowered with $50,000 to support her resilience.
The empowerment was supported by Managing Conflict in Nigeria (MCN), a program of the British Council.
The Project Officer (HACI), Simon Ishaya, disclosed this during distributions of cash grants to the beneficiaries in Maiduguri recently.
According to him, Women’s involvement in peace building in North-East Nigeria cannot be overemphasized, adding that in a post-conflict society, women play a vital role in building, reconstruction, and reintegration of society.
He said women remain a strong pillar in peace building and strengthening society’s resilience throughout pre and post-conflict situations.
He said findings from the project’s inception survey indicated that 89% of women in the communities covered are not involved in household decision making, which could be due to the low economic power of women in the communities.
One of the beneficiaries, Falimata Bukar, thanked the organiser for their gesture, while assuring that the grants would be judiciously utilised.
