Independence anniversary, time for sober reflection – SDP Candidate | Tellwell Newspaper

The Taraba State House of Representatives candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Maxwell Monshari, has charged Nigerians to use the country’s independence anniversary as a time for sober reflection and dedication to ushering in credible leaders for a prosperous future.
Monshari, who is jostling to represent Zing, Yorro and Jalingo Federal Constituency, made the call in a statement he issued in Jalingo, as Nigeria clocked 62 years of nationhood.
“This independence day should serve as a moment for sober reflection and time to renew our commitment as Nigerians to decide the future of our country as a place where our children will live in peace and tranquility,” Monshari said.
“We are now faced with the option of either electing competency or mediocrity, the politician said, reminding his compatriots of the task that lays ahead of “taking back our country from self-centered leaders.”
Monshari disclosed that the country had recorded successes and failures and faced several hurdles, including internal threats and undue external pressure from some foreign nations who wanted to tinker with her beliefs and practices.
“This year’s independence day is coming at a time when the country is faced with a myriad of challenges,” the SDP candidate said.
He listed the challenges to include insecurity, poor economic policies, inflation occasioned by the fall in the value of the naira, and seven-month industrial strike by university lecturers that has kept students languishing at home, among others.
According to Monshari, although it was easy to blame poor leadership for Nigeria’s woes, the citizenry share in the blame for not doing their part in fostering good governance through electing competent leaders at all levels.
This desire, he said, prompted his decision to seek the mandate of his federal constituency to help in rebuilding what “has been lost in the past six decades.”
