Tellwell Newspaper, Abuja – Nigeria:
The Republic of El Salvador has inaugurated an embassy in Rabat, the Latin American Country’s first in Africa.
“The opening of the first embassy of El Salvador in Africa, here in Rabat, is a living testimony to the excellence of bilateral relations,” Salvadoran Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexandra Hill Tinoco said during the inauguration ceremony Thursday. “It is a historic moment in Salvadoran foreign policy.”
The head of Salvadoran diplomacy emphasized her government’s commitment to working closely with Morocco on a wide range of issues of mutual concern.
“Despite the geographical distance and cultural diversity of our peoples, Morocco and El Salvador share the same values and principles,” Tinoco said.
“The visit of my Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, to San Salvador in June 2019, marked the beginning of the consolidation and strengthening of bilateral relations, to the point that Morocco has become our main ally and partner in Africa and the Maghreb region,” Tinoco noted.
Actually, it was in 2019 that El Salvador withdrew recognition of the self-proclaimed SADR, inaugurating an era of strong diplomatic relations with Morocco.
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, the representative of El Salvador to the UN, Carlos Efrain Segura Aragon, expressed before members of the UN General Assembly’s 4th Committee, his country’s support for Morocco’s efforts to find a realistic, pragmatic, and lasting political solution to the Sahara dispute, respecting the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the North African Kingdom.
The diplomat stressed that the Moroccan autonomy initiative, described as a viable solution in the Security Council resolutions since 2007, is the fundamental element of these efforts. The Salvadoran diplomat also praised the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to revive the political process under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations, as well as his recent visits to the region.
